ATTENTION Incoming First-Year Students and New Transfer Students

To determine whether you need to take the Writing Placement and Exemption Exam, please read the following directions carefully.

The College of New Jersey offers a Writing Placement Exam for students whose SAT, AP, or ACT scores have not otherwise satisfied the First-Year Academic Writng requirement (WRI 102). The following scores will place you out of WRI 102:

  • SAT scores of 580 or above in BOTH math and critical reading (Our data on TCNJ students indicates that high reading scores matched by high math scores are more effective predictors of college writing proficiency than reading scores alone.)
  • An ACT composite score or 26 or higher
  • An AP score of 4 or higher in English Literature, English Composition, US History, or World History.
  • An International Baccalaureate score in English of 5 or higher.

All scores must be reported to the College.

Transfer students may also be exempt from taking WRI 102 if, at your previous institution, you have taken a credit-bearing course (numbered 100 or above) in writing or composition which has been approved as equivalent to WRI 102.

For more details, see: http://writing.tcnj.edu/sample-page/wri-102-placement-exemptions/

If your test scores do not exempt you from WRI 102, and you would still like to try to place out of the course, you must take the Writing Placement Exam on either Thursday, May 31 or Saturday June 2, 2012. There are three time slots from which to choose. Please register for the day and time of your preference:

All exams will take place in the computer labs on the second floor of the Business Building. When you arrive, you will need to check in at the table in the hallway. Please be sure to bring some form of picture ID.

If you have not yet received your AP test scores, you can wait and if needed, take the Make-Up Placement Exam on Wednesday, August 29, 2012.

If you have any questions, please email writing@tcnj.edu or call 609.771.2864.

“I am my language. Until I can take pride in my language,

I cannot take pride in myself.”

–Gloria Anzaldua

“In some quarters, people regularly act as if the adage ‘Everybody has a right to their own opinion’ means that no one is obligated to lay out a case in support of their assertions.  In the academy, an opinion or an assertion is worthless unless you are also willing to make and examine your case in the light of evidence, asking whether the evidence is sufficiently and appropriately warranted.  The drama in academic arguments is not in the claim at all. Claims are a dime a dozen.  The action is in the argument.”

Welcome to the Writing Program at The College of New Jersey. Our goal is to promote the development of students’ identities as good writers. We hope all TCNJ students can eventually see themselves as informed participants in the wide range of “conversations” that make up academic and public discourse.  The courses offered in the Writing Program as well as throughout the college’s writing intensive curriculum will help students develop the skills necessary for today’s world.

This website was designed to assist you.  If you are a student, you can get important details about the placement exam, meet the writing faculty, learn about courses, and access guides to help you become a more effective writer.

If you are a faculty member, you’ll find practical resources whether you’re teaching WRI 102 or a writing intensive course—including information and links on rubrics, critical thinking, and other pedagogical issues.

We hope this site will answer any question you may have about the Writing Intensive Curriculum and the Writing Program at The College of New Jersey. If not, please feel free to contact us at (609) 771-2864 or E-Mail us at writing@tcnj.edu.
